Job description

An opportunity exists for an experienced and proactive Head Gardener / Working Supervisor to lead and support the delivery of high-quality grounds maintenance and horticultural standards. The role combines hands-on gardening work with staff supervision, planning, and coordination responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise, train, and lead the gardening team, ensuring all work meets agreed standards.
  • Develop and manage daily, weekly, and seasonal maintenance schedules.
  • Oversee equipment use, maintenance, and inventory; coordinate repairs and replacements.
  • Manage budgets, provide input on cost projections, and control expenditure on materials and services.
  • Interpret planting plans and specifications, ensuring effective design implementation and ongoing garden development.
  • Monitor and maintain the health of lawns, plants, and trees, including pest and disease management.
  • Oversee chemical spraying, fertiliser application, and green waste recycling.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulations and conduct regular on-site safety inspections.
  • Support a collaborative, positive environment with staff, contractors, and residents.
Essential Criteria:
  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Recognised horticultural qualification.
  • Strong practical knowledge of plants, trees, lawns, machinery, and H&S regulations.
  • Proven team leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Conscientious, hardworking, and physically resilient.
