What Do You Do When You Mess Up at Work?

We’ve all been there. When common sense takes a slip or memory just fails you, it’s impossible to go through life without making the occasional mistake, but the way you handle it can ultimately show more skill and competency than sailing through life doing everything right. Here are just 3 simple pieces of advice for the inevitable moment things don't go quite the way you planned, and you mess up at work:

Just Apologise

For some reason, many people did not learn the value of “sorry” as a child. It’s frustrating watching someone continue to dig their own hole, or throw others under the bus, when everything could be solved with a simple apology. It doesn’t make you look weak! If you messed up, just say sorry. It will get you far.

Rectify It

It can be all too tempting to sweep it under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen. But this will always eventually backfire; somewhere along the line someone will notice that something is amiss. Admit you messed up and put the wheels in motion to correct it.

Learn From It

One mistake is ok, two, fine. But if you’re finding the same issues are occurring over and over again you need to take a step back and learn from your mistakes. Are you skills up to scratch? Do you need to confront your manager and explain why there is an underlying issue? A mistake is forgivable, not taking the time to prevent future ones isn’t.

It’s important to realise mistakes actually play an important part in proving yourself at work. Problem-solving, honesty and using your initiative are key skills that will contribute to your success. Use a mistake to highlight how you handle negative situations and impress!
